Scalp Micropigmentation

A hairline drawn freehand, one follicle at a time. Not a tattoo of hair — thousands of individual impressions matched to your skin tone, density and the way your hair actually grows.

Scalp micropigmentation result — restored hairline and density

What it treats

Four things it fixes well.

  • Receding or thinning hairline — rebuilt to suit your face, not a template.
  • Density loss — pigment layered between existing hair so thinning stops reading as thin.
  • Full baldness — a clean, close-shaved look with a defined edge.
  • Scar camouflage — transplant scars and injury scars broken up and blended.

Works on every skin tone. Pigment is matched and diluted to your natural shade — the goal is a shadow that reads as stubble, never a solid block of colour.

The Procedure

Six steps, start to finish.

SMP is built in layers across multiple sessions. Anyone promising it in one sitting is doing it wrong — the density has to be built up gradually so the result settles evenly.

Step 01

Consultation

Text a few photos of your scalp in natural light and tell Shaun what's bothering you. He'll tell you straight whether SMP is the right answer, roughly how many sessions it'll take, and what it will cost — before you commit to anything.

No booking form, no deposit to have the conversation.

Step 02

Hairline design

The hairline gets mapped and drawn on before a single needle touches skin. Height, shape, temple recession and how sharp or soft the edge should be — all agreed with you while it's still just a pencil line.

This is the step that decides whether the result looks natural or looks done. It's worth the time.

Step 03

Session one — the foundation

The first pass lays the base layer: pigment placed follicle by follicle across the treatment area at a conservative depth and shade. It will look lighter than the final result, and that's deliberate.

Roughly 3 hours. You'll leave with a visible result the same day.

Step 04

Healing — the first week

Aftercare in the first four days does most of the work in how well the pigment settles. Keep it completely dry, no sweating, no hats, don't touch it. Full protocol below — you'll go home with it written down.

Light flaking around day five to seven is normal and expected.

Step 05

Sessions two and three

Once healed, the next passes add depth and density — darkening the shade, tightening the hairline and filling any areas that faded unevenly. Most clients need two to three sessions total, spaced a week or two apart.

This layering is why the result reads as real hair rather than a flat tone.

Step 06

The result — and keeping it

Expect 30–40% natural fading as the pigment settles; that's designed in, not a fault. SMP lasts three to five years before it needs refreshing, and touch-ups are a normal part of owning it.

Sun is the main enemy. SPF 30+ once healed keeps it sharp for longer.

Aftercare

What you do after matters as much as the session.

First 4 days — critical

  • Keep the scalp completely dry
  • No workouts or sweating
  • No hats, durags or helmets
  • Do not touch, scratch or apply products
  • Avoid sun, steam and heat

Day 5–7

  • Rinse gently with water only
  • Pat dry — do not rub
  • Light flaking is normal

Day 8 onward

  • Resume workouts gradually
  • Use a light, fragrance-free moisturiser
  • Shave gently if needed
  • Hats allowed once healed

Sun care

  • SPF 30+ after healing
  • Sun exposure fades pigment

Pricing & Questions

Priced at consultation.

Final cost depends on how much area is being covered and how many sessions it takes. You'll get a real number at consultation, not after you're in the chair.

Does it hurt?
Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful — closer to a light scratching than a tattoo, because the needle sits much shallower in the skin. The hairline and temples are the most sensitive areas. Sessions run around three hours with breaks whenever you need one.
How long does it last?
Three to five years before it needs a proper refresh. You should expect 30–40% natural fading as it settles — that's normal and accounted for in how the layers are built. Sun exposure is the biggest factor in how fast it fades.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually two to three, spaced a week or two apart. Larger areas or heavy scar work can take more. Shaun will give you an honest estimate at consultation rather than an optimistic one.
Will it look fake?
That comes down to hairline design and pigment shade — the two things that get the most attention here. The shade is diluted to sit slightly lighter than your natural hair so it reads as shadow, and the hairline is drawn freehand with soft irregularity rather than a hard straight edge. Have a look at the gallery and judge for yourself.
Can it cover a hair transplant scar?
Yes — scar camouflage is one of the more common requests. Pigment breaks up the smooth texture of scar tissue so it stops catching the light as a distinct line. Scars take pigment differently to healthy skin, so results vary and it's worth sending a photo first.
Do I have to shave my head?
Not necessarily. For full baldness the look works with a close shave. For density work on thinning hair, you keep your hair — pigment goes between existing follicles to reduce contrast between hair and scalp. Send a photo and Shaun will tell you which applies to you.
